Evolve Housing + Support, who work with people experiencing homelessness in Croydon, is running a series of community walks to help tackle social isolation and reduce the stigma around homelessness.
London’s rough sleeping numbers have increased by 71% in the last decade, and thousands of people are on long waiting lists for NHS mental health services. Evolve are the biggest provider of supported housing to people impacted by homelessness in Croydon; this has motivated them to organise a series of walks that encourage people in the community to take a mental health break and meet others in their area, including those who have been homeless.
The first walk will take place on Friday 17th May, to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week 2024. Another will run on Friday 31st May, and then Friday 14th June. Each will last for an hour between midday and 1 pm. They will happen in Wandle Park, and the meeting point will be Wandle Park tram station.
“We understand that one of the significant challenges faced by individuals experiencing homelessness is the feeling of isolation and disconnection from the community,” said Tom Markwell, Area Manager at Evolve Housing + Support.
“Through our community wellbeing walks, we aim to provide a supportive environment where people can feel safe, connect with others, and access the benefits of green spaces to improve their mental health. The walks constitute a physical activity, but also a chance for participants to meet others in their local community while doing something beneficial for their mental health.
“Everyone can contribute to creating a more connected and compassionate community. By joining the well-being walks, participants are not only prioritising their well-being but also supporting others in their journey towards a happier, healthier life. We encourage anybody based around central Croydon to come along and join us.”
